Is it dangerous to rent a house if you know that the previous tenant was selling drugs there?

Sorry if I sound naive, but I know that the previous tenant sold drugs, and is no longer living there because he is in jail. How likely is it that the house is dangerous or has drug paraphernalia on the premises? What can I do legally, to ensure my safety in that property before agreeing to rent it?
