What is the difference between a “double room” and a “single room” for rent in London?

I may be moving to London and I have been browsing room and apartment listings there to get an idea of what the cost would be to live there. I have seen listings for both double rooms and single rooms: does “double” mean that it is shared? Or is that just a bigger room?
If somebody lists that they have a “double room” for rent, does that mean they are renting out half a room, or maybe does it mean that they are looking for two people, or does it mean that one or two people would be ok?
